1. Take photos of things you don't care about.
I love my family, so I want to take perfect photos of them.
The best way to take perfect photos is to know what you are doing, know your camera, be focused and relaxed.
To be all those things you must practise, and the best way to practise is when it doesn't matter. If you want to photograph you child's running race, go to the park a week before and practice. Photographing a concert, practise shooting in low light or go to the rehearsals.

2. The best camera is...
The best camera is the one you have with you.
Whether if it's an iPhone or a $15,000 DLSR, if it's too heavy, not charge, or in the car, or whatever...it can't take photos. When buying a camera purchase the best one you can afford AND that you will take with you when you want to take photos. (Photo below is by iPhone)
I also love cameras that handle LOW LIGHT conditions well. That means they take better, sharper photos when it's getting dark

3. Candid
Let the kids relax.
Let the moments flow.
Don't force it.
Sometimes you can take a crayon out of the foreground, but that's about all.

4. Get an f1.8 lens
An f1.8 lens give your photos the great blurred background effect.
It blurs the messy or distracting background behind your kids.
It's also GREAT for shooting in low-light.

5. Get down low
You MUST get down to kids eye level or lower.
Use your knees and get down low.
